Iconic Cards

Pedro Martinez's cards tell the story of collecting a pitcher who bridged baseball's transition from the junk wax era to the peak of the parallel and insert boom of the late 1990s. His card catalog starts with affordable rookie cards like his 1992 Bowman that became some of the most recognizable cards of the era. As Pedro grew from a promising young arm into one of the all-time greats, his cards grew with him.

The mid-to-late 1990s introduced a golden age of experimental parallels, and Pedro's catalog captures it at its peak. Cards like the 1999 Metal Universe PMG /50, 1998 E-X2001 Essential Credentials, and 1999 Fleer Brilliants 24KT Gold showcase the era's obsession with innovative technology and ultra-low print runs which became a combination that makes 90s collecting rewarding, challenging, and sometimes expensive.

This Player Profile spans pivotal moments: from the first licensed autographed products in 1996 Leaf Signature to the birth of Topps Chrome. It covers significant firsts, notable second-year releases, and an option for every budget. Collecting Pedro means chasing some of the most ambitious card designs the hobby has ever produced, each addition a piece of both baseball history and collecting history.

About the Card: Upper Deck's Final Edition was a 100-card update set, similar to Topps Update, released to capture rookies who debuted after the base set. Released as a sealed factory set, Pedro's appearance here is actually his first in a major league licensed set and is considered his XRC, arriving the year before his official rookie cards. It's the first and earliest card in his basic PSA Set Registry checklist, making it the natural starting point for completionist collectors.

About the Card: Pedro's 1992 Bowman represents his first true and widely recognized rookie card. During his 1992 rookie season, Pedro had cards produced by Leaf and Fleer, but only one of those three has had over 15,000 copies graded and that's his Bowman rookie. This means collectors can pick up a Pedro rookie without breaking the bank and look elsewhere for Pedro rarity. While the card isn't typically in pristine condition, it does boast a gem rate around 15% that speaks to the card's quality, centering and print defects aside. This is the card for true rookie collectors and there's a reason it's his most highly graded card.

About the Card: The 1996 Leaf Signature series broke new ground as MLB's first licensed set guaranteeing a certified on-card autograph in every pack and the first MLB licensed autograph product in history. The scale was enormous, featuring 254 players, three parallels and over 1.2 million autographs signed just for this product. It also marked Pedro's first pack-issued autograph. The card's ample white space makes Pedro's black autograph really pop. Each player had bronze /3500, silver /1000, and gold /500 parallels, distinguished by the foil color in the Leaf Signature Series badge at the card's center.

About the Card: 1996 was the first year of Topps Chrome and marked the start of a brand that became an industry standard still going strong today. That debut status makes 1996 Chrome Refractors particularly significant, commanding premiums that later years don't match. The icy look of the refractor paired with the blue Expos uniform makes this card visually striking. Just keep in mind that the early refractor technology is prone to greening over time.

Rarity: πŸ’ŽπŸ’Ž

About the Card: 1997 Donruss Signature Series offered collectors a massive autograph checklist with 143 cards to chase at a time when pack-issued autographs were still rare. This is officially Pedro's second licensed pack-issued autograph and shows a bit more personality than his 1996 Leaf Signature. Each autograph came in three parallels: the base autograph, Millennium Marks /1000, and Century Marks /100. The Century Marks parallel strikes a nice balance between price and rarity, making it a compelling option for Pedro autograph collectors today.

About the Card: Circa Thunder's design feels quintessentially 90s. The grungy player badge fonts, the trippy psychedelic backgrounds feels like it's a complete time capsule. The set had two parallels: Rave numbered to /150 and Super Rave numbered to /25. The Super Rave's gold holographic foil treatment is the main event here. That swirling, light-reactive surface represents the peak of late 90s card technology, and it works beautifully on this card. But it's not for everyone given it's loud aesthetic. The Super Rave has developed a fierce following among parallel collectors who love exactly that bold approach.

1998 Flair Showcase

Prospective Card Cost: πŸ’°πŸ’°

About the Card: Fleer made history with their luxury product release of Flair Showcase in 1997. They introduced the three-tiered base checklist, the Legacy Collection parallel /100, and the 1/1 Masterpiece. The only problem for Pedro collectors was that he wasn't in the 1997 checklist. Despite being an All-Star in 1996, Pedro wasn't selected as one of the 5 Montreal Expos featured in Fleer's debut product. So Pedro collectors need to look to 1998 instead. The sophomore set kept the same tiered base configuration but added a "Row 3" to the existing Rows 0, 1, and 2. 1998 also features the Legacy Collection /100 parallel and the Masterpiece 1/1 for each Row variation. The Legacy Collection parallels hit a sweet spot of rarity and attainability for collectors who appreciate the Flair Showcase design.

1998 SkyBox E-X 2001

#39 Essential Credentials Future

Prospective Card Cost: πŸ’°πŸ’°πŸ’°πŸ’°
Rarity: πŸ’ŽπŸ’ŽπŸ’Ž

About the Card: 1998 E-X2001 has one of the hobby's most unique parallel configurations. The 101-card set includes two parallels: Essential Credentials Now and Essential Credentials Future. Each parallel is sequentially serial numbered based on the player's position in the checklist. The Now parallel is numbered to the player's checklist position, while the Future parallel is numbered to 101 minus that position. Since Pedro is #39 in the checklist, his Now parallel is numbered to 39 and his Future parallel to 62. The design builds on E-X2000's experimental acetate stock with layered die-cutting. Essential Credentials Future parallels feature a neon magenta-purple holographic finish with red and magenta acetate portions, while Essential Credentials Now parallels use a green holographic finish.

1999 Fleer Brilliants

Prospective Card Cost: πŸ’°πŸ’°πŸ’°πŸ’°
Rarity: πŸ’ŽπŸ’ŽπŸ’ŽπŸ’Ž

About the Card: Fleer Brilliants is one of the best one-and-done sets ever produced. It featured an attainable 175-card checklist, three straightforward parallels, compelling inserts, and a shine that still turns heads. The crown jewel of the set was the 24KT gold parallel. Serial numbered to 24 copies, the parallel was printed on thick 24-point styrene plastic stock coated in mirroring mylar foil with a gold background and rainbow-holographic reflective finish. It was the gold refractor parallel that helped set the stage for the iconic gold parallels that arrived in the years to come.

1999 Fleer Tradition

Prospective Card Cost: πŸ’°πŸ’°πŸ’°
Rarity: πŸ’ŽπŸ’ŽπŸ’ŽπŸ’ŽπŸ’Ž

About the Card: 1999 Fleer Tradition's rarest parallel was the Starting Nine, serial numbered to just 9 copies. In a late 90s landscape where most parallels numbered in the hundreds or thousands, this level of scarcity stands out. The card itself is a modest deviation from the base: blue foil on the player name and a Starting Nine stamp in the corner. It's a natural fit for collectors chasing the era's rarest parallels, and an appealing option for those drawn to the "Starting Nine" concept which is akin to building your own baseball lineup through collecting.

Rarity: πŸ’ŽπŸ’ŽπŸ’Ž

About the Card: 1999 Metal Universe holds just as much popularity as the 1998 release in collector circles today, yet the design couldn't be more different. Cards were printed on embossed etched foil with grungy sheet metal backgrounds consistent across every player in the set. The Precious Metal Gems (PMG) parallel was numbered to 50 and printed on gold foil holographic card stock. For Pedro, it also offers collectors with the lone opportunity to pick up a PMG of his in a Red Sox uniform since the 1998 release depicted him in an Expos uniform. Even with 50 copies out there, this card is exceedingly rare and only surfaces for public sale once every few years.

About the Card: The 1999 Skybox Premium, in its inaugural year, was loaded with notable inserts like Intimidation Nation and Soul of the Game, but the Star Rubies parallels, serial numbered to 50, were the product's standout. Pedro is depicted mid-delivery surrounded by a red and blue color trail that conveys the motion in his delivery. Star Rubies parallels are distinguished by their ruby red foil used on the Skybox Premium logo and the player's initials, team, position, and name at the bottom of the card.

About the Card: 1999 SP Signature has stood the test of time thanks to its simple yet iconic design. Blue ink on-card autographs really pop against the ample white space used throughout. A series of rounded rectangles and team colors flank the background to create a sharp-looking autograph card for the era. SP Signature included one autographed card in every pack and was Upper Deck's take on an auto-heavy product just a few years after Leaf's 1996 Signature Series. In addition to the non-numbered base autographs, the set also had a gold parallel hand numbered to 50 for collectors who love the card but want some rarity in what they're adding to their collection.

About the Card: There's nothing inherently special about Pedro's 2003 Topps Chrome card unless you're like me and you dig the profile shot of him wearing the shades. But it made the list because of the Silver Refractor. 2003 Topps Chrome was released in two series, and the Silver Refractors were exclusive to retail SKUs as mail-in redemptions. They were scarce to begin with, but the redemption expired in 2005, leaving many cards unfulfilled and making them even scarcer. They're ghosts compared to the Black /199 and Gold Refractor /499 counterparts, though both are solid options if you like the card but can't track down the Silver Refractor.

About the Card: Pedro appeared in the inaugural release of Topps Dynasty in 2014, but the combination of a dark design and his appearance only in a Mets uniform has collectors looking to his 2016 Dynasty cards instead. In 2016, Pedro had 17 image variations - 7 depicting him with the Montreal Expos, 5 with the New York Mets, and 5 with the Boston Red Sox, offering something for every Pedro collector. Each card came in a base version serial numbered to 10, a gray parallel serial numbered to 5, and a black 1/1. In total, Pedro had 272 autographs across the product. The inclusion of the Expos and Red Sox variations make this a standout Dynasty set for collectors chasing high-end patch autos.

A Few of My Favorites

The five Favorites below emphasize aesthetic appeal and affordability. They're a signal to think beyond the iconic and recognizable and to seek out cards that connect with your values as a collector. From the mysterious unreleased 1998 Select Numbers to the chunky patches of the 2000 UD Game Jersey, these choices reflect a collector's eye for visual impact over pure rarity.

1998 Select Numbers

Why It's a Favorite: Select, a Pinnacle brand, produced some of the shiniest baseball cards of the '90s. But their most intriguing creation, the 1998 Select Numbers insert, was never meant to be released. Pinnacle filed for bankruptcy in July 1998, months before the scheduled release. A bankruptcy judge ordered all non-issued cards to be destroyed, yet some have surfaced on the market in the decades since. The "Numbers" insert was intended to be serial numbered to a player-specific key statistic (Pedro's 305 strikeouts), but was never stamped or numbered. It's unlikely that all 305 copies exist, leaving collectors to wonder what could have been.

1998 Topps Chrome

#338 Refractor
F15.jpg

eBay-Button.png

As an eBay Partner, I may be compensated if you make a purchase.

Why It's a Favorite: The image Topps selected for Pedro's 1999 Topps and Topps Chrome cards feel like an old school baseball card. A great looking portrait shot showing Pedro with a four-seam grip, the image framed by embossed borders, and a 90's nameplate that looks like it belongs on his desk. Add on that refractor shine and a low graded pop count, and you have a compelling set of reasons to add it to your collection. Pair this with his other early Topps Chrome refractors and you have an interesting segment of your collection.

1999 SPx

#24 Radiance
F15.jpg
Tf0tYChzDHGN8sIN2HbX-back.jpg
eBay-Button.png

As an eBay Partner, I may be compensated if you make a purchase.

Why It's a Favorite: SPX has always pushed the design envelope with futuristic elements, and this year was no different. Upper Deck's SPX brand is best known for its die cut and hologram technology, but the 1999 release dialed back on both elements. Instead, the card's design looks like a base card with a foil badge attached.  The reason this card made my list is simple: it looks cool, the Radiance parallel is serial numbered to 100, and you can often pick up a copy for under $100. It's a card that shows you can find rare and interesting pieces without breaking the bank.

1999 Ultra

#150P Platinum Medallion /99

Nomar_1998_Fleer_Ultra_Platinum_Medallion_Pizzazz_Back.jpg
eBay-Button.png

Why It's a Favorite: Ultra's Platinum Medallion parallels offer a nice middle ground because they look sharp, they're serial numbered, and they won't break the bank. The 1998 release was the first year the parallel was serial numbered, but Pedro's image of him stretching his hamstring on the ground, squinting into the distance, doesn't do much for me. His 1999 Platinum Medallion on the other hand captures Pedro signing autographs for fans in a landscape-oriented shot. The nameplate really pops against the silver/platinum background, making this my pick among his serial numbered Platinum Medallions.

2000 UD Game Jersey

Why It's a Favorite: I couldn't round out Pedro's Player Profile without including at least one other patch card. There's plenty to choose from including his 1999 Upper Deck Game Jersey Patch, 2001 Leaf Certified's Fabric of the Game, 2003 Ultimate Collection Dual Patches, or any of his Upper Deck Super Patches. You can't go wrong with any of those, but the 2000 Upper Deck Game Jersey gets my vote. While Pedro's first jersey card was the 1999 UD Game Jersey, the brown design and thin jersey pieces left something to be desired. The 2000 version has a cleaner design that uses the pinstripe look in the background, and more importantly, features those chunky multi-colored patches that look so much better.
